Yet another one! Incredibly, due to the limited edition nature of this product line, I have been fortunate to be involved with an astounding 14 labels for Boston Beer in the last 2 years or so.
This is the latest - and possibly, the most irreverent one to date. The label was just approved and the release date is, as yet, undetermined.

Another in this playful series of labels for an interesting line of beers - a chocolate Bock, double I P A, barley wine, a Gose and now a Sahti. The subject matter for the art has been as eclectic as the recipes. Fun!

The Small Batch series grows. In addition to the four labels that have been on shelves since November there are two more coming soon and a third one "Verloren" which is German for lost, was announced just today on some of the industry blogs. Not one to fall behind in announcing my own work, here they are. Once again, these are collaborations in the absolute best sense with the enlightened art director I work with at Boston Beer.

This one showed up today on the blogs. One of the things I really enjoy about working on these labels (and the Imperial Series labels) is the fact that the drawings are sketches- not finished renderings. They have an iterative, fresh feel about them. More to come...

R P I Tribute Painting

This was a neat project I did for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I worked with the President's office and and with Dr. Jackson personally on this painting which was presented to a long time board member and champion of RPI. The recipient was a graduate of the school of Architecture and a lifelong builder, hence the architectural theme of the montage.
It is a large piece, 30" x 60", done on linen canvas. Multiple giclee on canvas prints were also reproduced and framed as gifts.

Sam Adams Imperial labels

Well, here they are - one of last year's favorite projects. I was asked to do the renderings for this new series of labels by a very talented designer, Matt Moffatt at Boston Beer. He incorporated them into these elegant, fresh designs. These finally arrived at the local beverage center this week. I did see digital images before but it is still a thrill to have the actual packaging in hand, to say nothing of the fine product inside!
I couldn't be more pleased.

Here is the first of a series of label illustrations I did for Boston Beer. This particular one is available in a variety pack. There will be a series of beautifully designed new labels for the Imperial line of beers starting with the Imperial White that will feature my drawings. Look for those in the near future!

Albany Institute of History & Art Exhibition

The exhibit covers the development of graphic design from the earliest use of printed text and images with items from the Albany/ upper Hudson Valley area including the work of artists and designers working today.
Here is a portion of the text from the Institute's announcement:

"Graphic Design—Get the Message! looks at graphic design from four themed areas: typography and early printing; commerce and graphic design; political and social messages; and the creative process. Through the use of posters, broadsides, package designs, paintings, decorative arts, historical photographs, and computer interactives, these four themes will address topics such as technology and innovation; manufacturing and commercial growth; changing aesthetics; typography; designers and the growth of the design profession; and social and political expression in graphic work. Graphic designs, objects, and the history of design work from the Albany area will be used to address broader issues of national and international significance. As it examines technological, commercial, aesthetic, and social factors, Graphic Design—Get the Message! will reveal not only how the field has changed over the years, but also how it has changed us.

Throughout its run, the exhibition will also feature a number of lectures and demonstrations by graphic designers and scholars in the field."

I am delighted to be a part of this 5 month long exhibition about graphic design which runs from February 5th through June 12th. I will also be giving a presentation on Friday, May 6th at 6:00 PM in conjunction with the exhibition.

It is a spectacular show and worth seeing -even without my work!

I am called on occasion to cover a trial for the five local television stations when cameras are not permitted in the courtroom in high profile cases. Another notable trial was the federal corruption trial of former Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno. See 'Courtroom art'.

'Having Our Say' film

This was done for the television movie about the Delaney sisters.
The story is based on their best selling book which was also produced as a play on Broadway. I will post the art that I did for that on the 'Theatre art' portfolio page at a later date.

Unwanted horse

Here is a pretty cool treatment of my work. The designer commissioned me to paint the horse plus three dozen small watercolors of various horses which she then combined in a sort of mosaic. This was for a veterinary relief campaign to rescue neglected horses which was underwritten by a pharmaceutical company.

Hooker painting

This is the most recent in a series of paintings I have done of traditional Irish workboats known as "Hookers" or "Galway Hookers" which are sailed throughout the Galway Bay region in the west of Ireland. These boats had all but completely disappeared by the 1970s but have since enjoyed a major renaissance.

Ralph Lauren video

Here is a project that I really enjoyed being a part of. It is a 6 minute online video where live action characters essentially walk around in a storybook. It is called "The RL Gang Fantastically Amazing School Adventure"
Working with a company called Filmworks that shot and directed everything, including me was a great experience. They made magic, in my opinion.
The process started with footage of the kids, dressed in Ralph Lauren back-to-school clothes that was shot on a green screen and then combined with the approximately 200 watercolors I did. The After Effects work done in post production was nothing short of brilliant and I was delighted to see my art 'come alive'. Add in the original score and narration by Harry Connick Jr. and the final piece was quite remarkable. Take a look.

Veterans Mural

I was commissioned to create a 36' long veterans mural for the State University of New York which would list all faculty and staff who had served in the Armed Forces from the University's beginnings to the present . The names are set on clear film sandwiched between sheets of glass and mounted, along with scores of photos on the painted mural.

American Girl 'Addy'

This is part of a series of drawings done in the manner of journal entries. These were done for the visitor center at the New York State Historic Site at Crown Point, NY which was a fort on Lake Champlain held successively by the French, British and Colonial forces. The idea was to add a personal dimension to the history of the site by fleshing out some of the records of people who lived and served at the fort. This group of drawings (30 or so) are presented in front of exhibit displays in a book format with pages that the visitor can turn to see the story of each of the individuals.
I will post additional images from this suite of drawings in the near future.

A law practice television ad

This law firm took the unique approach of using my drawings instead of live action footage for their ad campaign. They wanted to bring a courtroom sketch feel to the ads to set them apart from the competition.
